About This Tool
Data Size Converter converts between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, and petabytes โ in both base-10 (SI) and base-2 (IEC binary) standards. The ambiguity between 1 KB = 1000 bytes and 1 KiB = 1024 bytes causes confusion constantly in storage specs.
Hard drive manufacturers use base-10 (smaller numbers look bigger), while operating systems traditionally use base-2. This explains why a 1 TB drive shows as roughly 931 GB in Windows.
Tip: When comparing storage specs to OS reports, use the binary IEC conversion โ 1 GiB equals 1,073,741,824 bytes versus 1 GB equalling 1,000,000,000 bytes. That 7% gap accounts for the apparent missing storage.
