About This Tool
The BMR Calculator estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate — the number of calories your body needs at complete rest to maintain basic life-sustaining functions like breathing, circulation, and cell production.
This calculator uses two well-established formulas: the Harris-Benedict equation (revised in 1984) and the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990). The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is generally considered more accurate for modern populations.
Your BMR accounts for roughly 60-75% of your total daily energy expenditure. Knowing your BMR is the foundation for calculating your total daily calorie needs when combined with your activity level.
